The Lost Lake

Author/Illustrator: Allen Say
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Company
Publication Date: 1989
Awards: Houghton Mifflin Award Edition
Genre: realistic picture book
Audience: Gr. 3+

Overview: This story is about a young boy that decides to live with his father for the summer. At first, the dad does not have time for his son as he is very busy with his job, but at the end, the father surprises him when he plans a camping trip, just the two of them, to the “Lost Lake.”

Activity: After reading the book, the children could take on dramatic roles of both the son and the father and act out according to the story, or even add an alternate ending. For another activity, each student could be paired with someone else, one being the father, the other the son, and the two students could come up with an alternate event to the story, write it down and then later act it out in front of the class.
