Eyewitness Books: Crime & Detection

Author: Brian Lane
Publisher: DK Children
Publication Date: 2005
Genre: Nonfiction
Audience: Gr. 4–6

Overview: I never had cable TV growing up, and when I finally discovered it a few years ago I very quickly got hooked on crime dramas like Law & Order and CSI. Anyone who likes a good detective story — kids or adults — would probably enjoy Crime & Detection, a nonfiction book from the Eyewitness series that chronicles the history of crime and crime-fighting, from the ancient Babylonian Code of Hammurabi to the latest advances in mass spectrometry, lie detectors, and computer forensics.

Most of the book consists of colorful collage spreads — forensic equipment, famous personalities, police paraphernalia, and so on — with accompanying explanatory blurbs, making it easy to pick up and skim through even when one doesn't have much time to devote to reading. There is also a glossary, a number of suggested activities for kids, and a list of related websites at the end.
