Overview: When Amy’s father becomes a soldier and leaves the country during World War II, Amy’s mother needs to find a job to support her and Amy. She decides to try out for the baseball team, and makes it. Amy and Grandma and Grandpa go to see all of Mama’s games, and Amy helps her mother by throwing baseballs for her to catch at home. Finally, Amy’s father comes home, and Amy shows him all the pictures she has drawn of Mama playing baseball.
Activity: Have students research a female baseball player or a female sports team. Ask children to present their findings to the class.
