Overview: Story about a grocer who wants a ferocious watchdog to look after his store at night. He ends up with a big shaggy dog, Rags, who is anything but your typical watchdog. When the time comes for Rags to protect the shop will he come through? Wonderful illustrations that help the story come alive. Each page is full of long dialogue so I would recommend that stronger readers read this.

Activity: Have the students draw pictures of their own interpretation of a watchdog using pastels.
