Overview: This is a story about a boy named Jess Aarons who befriends a tomboy girl who moves in next door, Leslie Burke. Together they create a secret kingdom known as Terabithia where they are the king and queen. The only way to get to it is by swinging on an enchanted rope across a gully. They are able to find a place of sanctuary until a tragic event happens that changes one of the characters lives.
Activity: Have the students come up with their own type of sanctuary. What would they name it? Where would it be? Have them also draw a picture of what their secret place would look like.
